April and May 2023 Update

Hi everyone 🐳

The spring is behind us and the summer is finally here! 😎 We've spent the last couple of months hard at work on a whole bunch of things that we'll break down for you here!

Funkwhale 1.3.0-rc6

We've released the sixth release candidate for Funkwhale 1.3.0. This update includes some minor fixes, documentation updates, and quality of life improvements. We're excited for you all to check it out.

Our hope is that 1.3.0-rc6 will be our final release candidate before we ship 1.3.0. To make sure we're ready, we're looking for people to lend us a hand with translations! If you want to see Funkwhale in your language, check out our translation platform to help out.

FFA 0.2.0 and 0.2.1

As we announced in a previous post, we've release an update to Funkwhale for Android (FFA). This update addresses a few bugs and dependency updates. It also removes a nonfree component to bring us in line with F-Droid's guidelines.

Infrastructure working group

Georg posted a proposal in our forum to talk about how we manage our infrastructure. If you're a member and want to get involved in the discussion, we'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you're not already a member, why not introduce yourself and request membership? It's fast and free!

Funkwhale 1.4.0 work

Hot off the release of 1.3.0-rc6, we've already started work on 1.4.0. A lot of this work is still in the planning phase, and we're trying to make sure we don't rush anything out before it's ready. But rest assured that 1.4.0 shouldn't take anywhere near as long to ship as 1.3.0 has!

To take a glimpse at our plans, check out this forum post.

Open Podcast API

The Funkwhale project has partnered with contributors to Antennapod, Kasts, Podfriend, and gPodder for Nextcloud to work on a new podcast sync API spec. This specification will enable developers to build tools to synchronize podcast playback.

The first specs are currently being drafted. If you'd like to know more, check out the repository on GitHub.

Monthly updates

You may have noticed that our monthly updates aren't so... well, monthly! Currently, our updates are all written by one person (me, hi!) which means that any time pressure I'm under causes updates to go out later. We'd love to have some more people help out by writing blog posts, social media posts, and the like. If this sounds like something you're interested in, introduce yourself on our forum!

That's all for now. Keep on swimming! 🐋
